Causes of Silicosis Disease

Exposure to airborne silica dust is the main risk factor for silicosis disease. Such exposure is also associated with lung cancer, pulmonary tuberculosis, and airway diseases. There is also evidence that it may increase the likelihood of contracting certain autoimmune disorders, chronic renal disease, and other adverse health effects.

Studies have indicated that even at officially approved levels, workers still have a significant risk of developing chronic silicosis disease when they are exposed to silica over a working lifetime. Certain industries pose a particularly high risk. Review the list of potential silicosis sources to see if you can pinpoint where you might have been exposed to loose silica dust.

Prevention is the only way to avoid silicosis disease. If you work in a high-risk occupation or have a high-risk hobby, wear dust masks and do not smoke. Other protection prescribed by OSHA, such as a respirator, may be advised.
