Silica is a chemical compound which often occurs in a crystalline form known as "quartz" or sand. Crystalline silica is found in soil, sands, rocks, and many other natural and man-made substances. More.

What kinds of treatments are available?

Treatments include simple measures to control symptoms as well as alternative approaches to managing stress and help you be as comfortable as possible.

What kinds of illnesses are caused by silica?

Silicosis, lung cancer, tuberculosis, lupus, scleroderma, and rheumatoid arthritis are among the diseases caused by the inhalation of breathable crystalline silica dust. Silicosis is the most common disease and is the oldest known occupational lung disease.

How will my doctor diagnose silicosis?

If you are experiencing chronic shortness of breath and were exposed to silica, you should contact your doctor immediately for more information about silicosis. The symptoms of silicosis can be easily mistaken for other illnesses. See Symptoms.

What treatments will I receive?

Unfortunately there is no specific treatment for silicosis. Your doctor may recommend cough suppression medications, bronchodilators, and oxygen. Antibiotics may be prescribed for respiratory infections. Other considerations for treatment include smoking cessation and elimination of the source of silica exposure to prevent further worsening of the disease. Lung surgery may also be recommended.

Am I in danger of getting tuberculosis (TB) because I have silicosis?

Silicosis patients are at higher risk of developing tuberculosis (TB). Researchers believe that silicosis interferes with the body's immune response to the bacteria that causes TB. Your doctor will probably recommend you get routine yearly skin testing to check for exposure to TB. If your test is positive, he or she may also recommend treatment with anti-TB drugs.

I believe I was exposed to silica on the job. What are my legal rights?
