Respirators
Special protective equipment called respirators are available to protect workers from inhaling silica. Respirators are acceptable as protective equipment but should be used only when major control efforts (using substitute materials, automating the process, enclosing systems, and venting exhaust locally) fail to maintain safe limits.
Sandblasters must use the type of respirator recommended by NIOSH for their particular job. Workers in other segments of the abrasives industry, should wear type CE abrasive-blasting respirators. This device operates in continuous-flow mode and uses two air lines: one that supplies clean air to a hood or helmet worn and a separate line that supplies air for blasting.
The OSHA respiratory protection standard of 1998 mandates certain procedures that must be used to ensure worker safety and proper operation of respirator equipment. They include:
-
Periodic air monitoring
-
Regular training of workers in respirator use
-
Selection of proper NIOSH-approved respirators
-
A medical determination of the worker's ability to perform the work while using a respirator
-
Respirator fit testing
-
Maintenance, inspection, cleaning, and storage of respirators The respiratory protection program should be evaluated regularly by the employer.
