Potential sources

You may have been exposed to loose silica particles or airborne silica dust in any number of work-related situations. Silica, a common, naturally occurring crystal found in most rock beds, produces dust when disturbed in any way. Anyone who works with metal ores, or is employed in occupations such as mining, quarrying, or tunneling is at risk for exposure to this dust. Glass workers and sand-blasters also receive heavy exposure to silica since it is a principal component of sand.

Some operations, like dry sweeping, the clearing of sand or concrete, or the cleaning of masonry with pressurized air can generate large dust clouds. Thus even in open air these activities can be hazardous.
