Steps you can take
You must take special care to maintain certain hygiene habits in order to minimize your exposure to silica. Silica and other harmful substances can remain on your clothes, skin, hair, or car, putting not only you, but also other household members at risk.
-
Use certified respiratory protection when silica exposures exceed safe limits.
-
Use water to remove dust from equipment rather than compressed air. Use vacuums with HEPA filters. Use wet sweeping instead of dry sweeping.
-
Wear disposable protective clothes at work.
-
Shower and change into clean clothes before you leave work.
-
Do not eat, drink, smoke, or apply cosmetics in dusty areas.
-
Wash hands and face before eating, drinking, or smoking outside dusty areas.
-
Do not park cars where they can be contaminated with silica or other pollutants.
