Compensation
Silicosis is the disease most associated with crystalline silica exposure; it is incurable but preventable. This debilitating and often fatal lung disease persists worldwide despite long-standing knowledge of its cause and methods for controlling it. As a result many people with the disease have questions about whether or not they have the right to be compensated. There are several potential sources of financial assistance and/or compensation for people who have been diagnosed with silcosis.

From Manufacturers
Your best option for obtaining compensation is to file a claim against the companies responsible for your exposure. Often these amounts are large enough to provide financial security for families. Be sure to choose a competent, experienced law firm that is willing to handle your case on a contingency fee basis so that you don't have to pay litigation costs yourself. Be sure to ask whatyour lawyer's policy is in this regard. Read more at What to Look for in a Law Firm.
From Health Insurance
Speak with the hospital staff member (ask your nurse who handles these issues) designated to assist people who have questions about hospital costs and medical insurance coverage. If you face large medical bills and long hospital stays, you will want an advocate who will manage the often-frustrating insurance claims process on your behalf. In some cases you may also choose to take legal action against your insurance company if they should unfairly deny you coverage for your medical treatment.
You may also be able to file a disability claim if you have private disability insurance through your employer or as part of your life insurance policy.
From Social Security
You can file a disability claim with social security, however this can be time-consuming and difficult so you are best advised to consult with an attorney experienced in this area
From Worker's Compensation
If you were exposed to silica dust on your job, you can file an additional claim for compensation against your employer through worker's compensation. You are well advised in this area, too, to speak with an attorney who handles worker's compensation claims. One who also handles claims against the silica industry can help you make sure that filing multiple claims would not challenge the legitimacy of any individual claim.

From Legal Action
The federal government decided some time ago that any person or company that knowingly exposed people to loose silica dust may be held liable to compensate those who develop silicosis and other lung ailments and lung diseases. The spouse and family of an injured or deceased victim may also be eligible to bring legal claims. How much you can recover will depend in part upon having competent, caring legal advice that has your best interests at heart.
Many law firms do not charge for their services unless a recovery is made. Be sure to ask what your lawyer's policy is in this regard. Read more at What to Look for in a Law Firm.
