Financial Assistance

Although finances are probably the last thing you want to deal with at this time, you and your loved ones may feel comforted comforted if your financial affairs are in order. Hopefully you will have the right to receive compensation from those responsible for your exposure to asbestos, but in the meantime you need to think about how you will pay for your medical care and provide for your family.

If you don't have health insurance, there are many other sources of financial assistance available, so don't be concerned that you won't have access to good care and support. And even if you do have insurance, certain costs might not be covered by your plan. Begin by talking with your insurance carrier to find out what your coverage includes and how much out-of-pocket expenses you should expect. If you need assistance, ask your doctor or hospital representative to work with your carrier to find the best options for you.

If you are over 65 or are disabled, you may get some help from Medicare coverage. Call them at your local Social Security office or the Medicare Hotline, 800-MEDICARE (800.633.4227). If you are also eligible for Medicaid, additional help may come from there (find out from your state or local social services department). More information on Medicaid is available at the U.S. government website for Medicaid Consumers at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/medicaid/consumer.asp?.
